Dr. Gemma Angel completed her PhD at University College London History of Art Department, working in collaboration with the Science Museum London. Her doctoral work focused upon the Wellcome Collection’s preserved tattooed human skin collection.
Gemma developed a passionate interest in tattooing whilst studying for her first degree in Fine Art at The University of Leeds, from 2000-2004. After acquiring her second tattoo aged 21, she went on to train as a tattooist alongside her art degree. The two areas of her practice came together during her degree show in 2004, which you can read more about here.
Immediately following her BA studies, Gemma went on to study secondary education, graduating from Manchester Metropolitan University with a PGCE in Art & Design in 2005. Gemma worked as a secondary school art teacher, before moving into learning and behaviour support and special needs teaching over the course of the next four years, in schools across Greater Manchester, and in Aberdeen.
In 2008, Gemma Angel returned to higher education, and gained her Masters degree in Visual Anthropology from the University of Manchester’s Granada Centre in 2009. Shortly after she was awarded an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award to study the Wellcome tattooed human skin collection with UCL and the Science Museum.
When she is not researching fragments of preserved tattooed human skin, Gemma enjoys tying herself in knots suspended from the ceiling, learning the art of aerial silks.
